About Us

We are the Physics Society of Glasgow Uni!
Our goal is to bring the physicists and physics enthusiasts of our university together with academic and non-academic events throughout the year.
Join us for our various guest lectures by experts in their field or stop by for our tutorials on how to write lab reports in LaTeX. If you need a break from all the stress of a physics degree, we also host pub crawls, ceilidhs and quiz nights or cross-over events with other societies.
We also run a small library in Room 332 of the Kelvin Building with many course textbooks available for all our members. Stop by any week day of the semester between 12-2pm to browse our books or chat to us!

Guest Lecture: We need to talk about Kelvin!

Tuesday 13/02 - 6pm
St. Andrews Building 234
2024 marks 200 years since the birth of William Thomson, better known as Lord Kelvin: renowned scientist, mathematician and engineer who was Professor of Natural Philosophy (what we nowadays call Physics) at the University of Glasgow for more than 50 years. Lord Kelvin was one of the most influential scientific figures of the nineteenth century – not just because of his research, but as a pioneer of turning fundamental science into commercial innovation and in laying the foundations for how we teach science today. Join Martin Hendry for a whistle-stop tour through some of Lord Kelvin’s greatest discoveries (and his biggest mistakes) as he explores how Kelvin’s scientific legacy lives on – in everything from fridges to magnets (and even fridge magnets!) and much more in besides.

7 Minutes of Science

20/02 - 6:30pm
Kelvin Building 257
Join us for a conference-style event to hear about the exciting research being done in the various departments of our university!

Science Ball

31/03 - 6:30pm
DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow Central
Our annual ball for all GU Scientists, including a 3 course meal, ceilidh band and a photobooth!
